Reusable Fundraising Ideas to Help Beat Plastic Pollution

On 5 June, we celebrated World Environment Day and joined together across the globe to change our attitude and behavior about plastics. The campaign’s website called plastic pollution an epidemic and provided a startling statistic: Every year, we throw away enough plastic to circle the Earth four times! Another charity, Surfers Against Sewage, reports that 8 million pieces of plastic enter the oceans every day.

Your charity supporters will likely appreciate even a small opportunity to do their part to reduce this waste. So, in honour of World Environment Day and its critical #BeatPlasticPollution campaign, we share five ways that your charity can get involved while supporting your fundraising goals at the same time.  Read on for fundraising ideas to help your charity take an earth-friendly approach to fundraising with items like reusable coffee cups and biodegradable pens.

Bags for Life

The Independent presents a “humbling” thought: While plastic bags have only been around for about 50 years, it could take up to 1,000 years for them to fully decompose. The solution? A durable bag for life! Reusable bags can be used in place of plastic bags to cut down on plastic pollution. They can also help raise awareness of your charity as your supporters will carry these bags with them while shopping, commuting and travelling. Today, reusable bags are strong, trendy and very customisable, meaning that you don’t have to forgo fashion or function to feel good about your choices in fundraising products. Popular options include low-cost, lightweight canvas bags, functional and attractive foldable bags, and bespoke biodegradable jute bags.

We can also help you think creatively about how you’ll use reusable bags to raise money. For example, you could sell these on your charity website or use them as raffle prizes or giveaways at your next event. Adding a clever hashtag to one side of the bag is another effective strategy to drive awareness of your campaign.

Reusable Water Bottles

A 2017 article in the Guardian reports that every minute, one million plastic bottles are bought around the world and this number will jump another 20 percent by 2021! However, awareness of this issue is growing and people are looking to do their part to reduce waste. Make it easy for your advocates to “ban the bottle” and offer them a durable and attractive reusable water bottle. It will help protect the environment while promoting your charity name and logo. For some ideas, check out an earlier blog post in which we presented five of the most popular types of bottles including:

  • Foldable water bottles for your busy, on-the-go supporters
  • Flip top water bottles to appeal to a wide base
  • Sports bottles that are made locally, right here in Britain
  • Aluminum bottles that are lightweight yet durable
  • Infused water bottles for a unique crowd-pleaser

As a bonus, reusable water bottles can also help your charity leverage the upcoming ban on sales of single-use plastic straws. One great suggestion is this customisable drinking bottle with a reusable straw, which comes in a range of bright colors.

Reusable Coffee Cups

We’ve already presented quite a few startling statistics, and here’s one more: The Independent reports that 99 percent of disposable coffee cups are not recyclable. Every minute, one million of them end up in landfills across the globe. Disposable coffee cups often come with plastic tops, which are also thrown away after each use. The solution for your supporters? A bespoke reusable coffee cup.

Leverage the power of #BeatPlasticPollution and give your supporters an eco-friendly way to enjoy their morning coffee on the go. Customisable and reusable coffee cups are available in a wide range of styles and designs to support your unique goals. For example, you can choose from stainless steel options, ceramic photo mugs, or even bamboo mugs, like this one.

Biodegradable Pens

Another winning idea to help beast plastic pollution is to offer a useful, always-needed and eco-friendly item: a biodegradable pen! We offer an entire line of pens that are made mostly from plants that are biodegradable and compostable. Here’s an example of our customisable Bio S! pen that is derived 80 percent from plants and is available in a range of colours.

Another creative option is a “Vegetal frost pen” that is made from vegetables and is easily compostable. These pens will make great, feel-good items for your next fundraising event or campaign, whether you provide them as a thank you to your volunteers or supporters or sell gift packs of them on your charity website.
