Receiving a cancer diagnosis is a traumatic experience. Oftentimes, one of the hardest parts of the ordeal is overcoming the added stress of appearance related side-effects of cancer and its treatment. From changes in complexion to hair loss, it can be an overwhelming challenge to get used to the new face in the mirror.
That’s where Look Good Feel Better (LGFB) comes in. The international cancer support charity helps men and women look good – and in turn, feel better – while fighting cancer. The charity provides free, practical support for people struggling with the visible side effects of cancer treatment and hosts confidence-boosting workshops across the UK, as well as extensive online support.
The charity’s annual fundraising week, Feel Better Week, has always served as a time when LGFB works to heighten awareness of and support for its programmes. In 2018, LGFB partnered with multinational retailer Debenhams to help strengthen its fundraising efforts during this crucial time by turning Debenhams’ in-store beauty consultants into an incredibly effective team of fundraisers.
Looking Good, Whilst Doing Good
Leading up to Feel Better Week, LGFB reached out to Rocket Charities with the idea of creating charitable wristbands that Debenhams’ could display within its beauty halls, as well as spray with perfume samples. The Rocket Charities team quickly understood LGFB’s vision for the campaign and suggested its fabric Charity Fundraising Bracelets as the ideal option. Made from soft material and finished with silver beads, the fabric wristbands offered a unique and stylish option with the ability to add an all-over design.
To create an eye-catching design for the bracelets, LGFB teamed up with acclaimed British designer, and LGFB supporter, Matthew Williamson. Known for his bold, colourful designs, Williamson went to work creating three unique prints for the fabric wristbands. Once the designs were complete, Rocket Charities turned the beautiful patterns into brilliant, high-quality fashion bracelets.
The stylish bands were then released exclusively within Debenhams Beauty Halls to coincide with the launch of Feel Better Week. Supporters could purchase the charitable bracelets from participating Debenhams stores for just £2, with 100 percent of profits donated directly to LGFB. The unique fashion bracelets also served as creative conversation starters for beauty hall consultants to speak with customers about the charity’s important message and services. Consultants used the bracelets as canvases for perfume samples to help get them in front of and capture the attention of customers.
A Positively Smashing Success
The beautiful bands proved incredibly popular with supporters as a way of looking good, whilst doing good. Sales from the limited edition LGFB wristbands helped contribute to more than £185,000 in funds raised for LGFB during Feel Better Week and paved the way for a stronger relationship with Debenhams.
Also launched as part of Feel Better Week 2018, Debenhams helped raise the profile of LGFB by signposting customers to their local LGFB service, where trained beauty hall consultants provide at-counter advice and support on managing some of the visible side effects of cancer treatment.
